  Abstract

A new strategy for reducing fiber strength loss that occurs during the extraction of cotton stalk bark fibers (CSBF) has been investigated. Fineness and strength are essential considerations for the industrial application of lignin-rich fibers such as CSBF. However, conventional chemical treatments with small molecule alkalis or hydrogen peroxide may result in synchronous degumming between the interior and exterior of the fiber bundles, resulting in CSBF with a coarse fi neness of 51±14 dtex or a fi ber strength as low as 2.0±0.3 cN/dtex. So far, there is still no effective method to extract CSBF with both good fineness and high breaking strength. Here, fiber strength loss was lowered by introducing a cationic modifi cation pretreatment prior to the hydrogen peroxide treatment. To produce a cationic fiber surface, a large-molecular modifier was synthesized. Thus, the oxidative behavior of hydrogen peroxide was controlled in the outer layer of the fiber bundles. The 9 wt% modifier treated CSBF showed an enhanced fineness of 19.6±2.1 dtex, and the strength of the CSBF was maintained at a high level of 3.8±0.2 cN/dtex. Analysis results of XRD, IR, TG, and the cell morphology confirmed the removal of gum from the fiber surface, whereas the interior of the fi bers remained intact. This study provides an effective and feasible strategy for the extraction of high-quality CSBF, which will assist in solving the issue of the limited application of lignin-rich fibers.
