  Abstract

Prevention of electric-shock accidents caused by worker negligence in areas having live wires is the topmost priority in work safety management. Because of the invisible nature of such areas, workers are entirely dependent on notifications from live-wire alarms while working with live wires, and the risk of electric-shock accidents is ever present in areas with live wires because of the volatility of the live-wire work radius. These issues have created a need for the development of systematic theoretical and practical measures for safety management. In this study, we analyzed the change in the failure rate of a live-wire alarm with a change in its failure inspection cycle and the impact of electric-shock accidents due to uncertainty in the worker's work radius. Inspection of 200 live-wire alarms in live-wire areas at 6-month intervals revealed that an average of 3 alarms were defective and replaced. On the basis of this information, we calculated the failure rate of live-wire alarms used in live-wire areas and the optimal replacement cycle of these alarms and used Monte Carlo simulation techniques to estimate the impact of electric shock accidents according to work radius variability. We anticipate our study to have practical applicability in work safety management in live-wire areas and in the prevention of electric-shock accidents.
