  Abstract

Traditional Fire Probabilistic Safety Assessment (PSA) methodologies evaluate fire risk using conservative assumptions, such as assigning a uniform severity to ignition sources without considering their distance from targets, and assuming that all equipment and cables within a fire compartment are damaged. However, the latest Fire PSA methodology, NUREG/CR-6850, recommends a more realistic approach that considers the heat release distribution rate of ignition sources and their distance from targets. This study developed a computational program based on the NUREG methodology and compares its results with those from traditional methods. Using the NUREG-1805 Fire Dynamics Tools (FDTs), the proposed methodology suggests screening scenarios based on zone of influence (ZOI) and calculated severity based on the heat release rate of affected targets. Analysis of a hypothetical motor control fire scenario showed that the proposed methodology estimated core damage frequency for a single ignition source to be reduced by 89.2%. Additional potential for fire risk reduction was identified when considering the impact on damaged equipment from all ignition sources. The developed computational program enhances the accuracy and reliability of risk assessments by enabling automation and visualization, thereby reducing errors in the application of the new proposed methodology.
