  Abstract

High-altitude work poses a significant risk of falls, ranking among the leading causes of accidents in industrial workplaces. To minimize these risks, safety harnesses and lanyards are essential, though their effectiveness can differ based on material and design. In particular, the shock absorption performance and elongation characteristics directly influence the impact force during a fall and the increase in fall distance, necessitating quantitative evaluation and comparison. This study conducted dynamic load tests on safety lanyards made from different materials (poi, seil, and elastic) to analyze their shock absorption and elongation performance. Drop tests compared the maximum impact load and length variation of each material, revealing performance differences based on material properties. The results showed that all lanyards met Industrial Safety and Health Act standards, but there were notable differences in shock absorption and elongation characteristics depending on the material. Therefore, this study emphasizes the need to establish usage guidelines that consider the characteristics of lanyard materials during high-altitude work. Furthermore, safety standards must be refined beyond minimum requirements to better match diverse working conditions and material-specific performance.
