  Abstract

In the event of a severe accident in a nuclear power plant, quick and accurate predictions for the release of radioactive materials into the environment, the dispersion of radionuclides, and the health effects due to relevant radiation exposure should be made to minimize any additional harm. In addition, the preparedness for a possible emergency situation, it is necessary to establish emergency response measures to mitigate the adverse effects of the accident. The radiological source term is the amount and manner of a release of radioactive materials into the environment after a severe accident of nuclear power plant. The manner of release is comprised of timing, height, energy, and particle size distribution. The experience of the Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear power plant accident demonstrated how influential it could be if accurate and quick source term estimation is not supported in a radiological emergency situation. Source term analysis is a fundamental procedure when performing a probabilistic safety assessment (PSA) and establishing accident management programs (AMP) for nuclear power plants. This study reviewed source term analyses for existing nuclear facility accidents, and the approaches used to analyze the source terms were investigated. In addition, a historical overview of the studies regarding source term analyses was carried out, and the source term estimation software used for emergency response was also reviewed. It is expected that the comprehensive investigation and review in this study will support the development of new technology for source term analysis as a comprehensive reference of source term evaluation.
