  Abstract

Since natural dyes show poor affinity for cellulosic fibers such as cotton and viscose, the dyeing of cotton fabrics with natural dyes requires mordanting treatment. The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of the soy flour compared to casein sodium salt and soy protein acid as a natural mordant on the dyeability of the cotton fabrics dyed with caesalpinia sappan extracts. As a result, the total K/S value of soy flour treated and untreated cotton fabrics dyed with 40% of caesalpinia sappan extracts were 107.14 and 74.21, respectively. After mordanting and washing, the total K/S value of pre-mordanting treated and untreated cotton fabrics was 69.50 and 42.77, respectively. Therefore treatment of soy flour as a mordant shows relatively excellent dyeability compared to the untreated sample.
