- Study on ecosystem GHGs exchange and its response to climate change in Northeast Asia -
Apr. 19 – 21, 2023, Busan, Republic of Korea

1. Background and objectives
By integrating the three networks: ChinaFlux, JapanFlux, and KoFlux, this international collaborative research is designed to conduct network-to-network integrative research on carbon cycle studies, and to improve land surface models by regional data assimilation, so as to synthetically quantify and understand the terrestrial carbon budget in Northeast Asia and its roles in the global carbon cycle.
The major objectives of the project are to:
1) reveal the temporal and spatial patterns of carbon budget in China, Japan, and Korea, and to clarify the biogeographical characteristics and formation mechanism of terrestrial ecosystems carbon storage and flux of Northeast Asia;

2) quantify the strength of non-CO2 greenhouse gases (e.g., CH4, N2O) sink/source, and their spatial and temporal variability (dynamic) of Northeast Asian ecosystems;

3) analyze the response and adaptation of key processes of carbon cycle and greenhouse gases exchange to climate change and anthropogenic activities (e.g., land use change and land cover change) of Northeast Asia;

4) quantitatively evaluate the carbon source/sink function and its uncertainties of Northeast Asia terrestrial ecosystems by integrating field network data, remote sensing, multi-model comparison, and data assimilation methods;

5) scientifically understand the carbon sequestration potential of Northeast Asia terrestrial ecosystems, explore the technological approaches and measures for mitigation and adaptation to global climate change in typical regions, and put forward policy suggestions for increasing the sink of Asian ecosystems.
2. Major goals of the project
This project will bring together scientists from China, Japan and Korea to evaluate and integrate carbon dioxide and non-CO2 greenhouse gases (e.g., CH4, N2O) flux measurements made in individual countries, and to up-scale site-specific results, to regional, national and finally entire Northeast Asia by implementing following activities:

1) Inter- and trans-disciplinary joint field investigation
2) Net-working flux measurements
3) Net-working field controlling experiments
4) Model development, parameterization and validation
5) Up-scaling and integration efforts
6) Science meetings, short-term visits and exchange scholars
3. Workshop information
The workshop will be held from April 19 (Wed) to April 21 (Fri), 2023, at Shilla Stay Haeundae. Shilla Stay Haeundae is located in front of the famous Haeundae Beach, one of the most popular tourist destinations in Busan, Republic of Korea. Participants can enjoy comfortable accommodation at Shilla Stay Haeundae (https://m.shillastay.com/haeundae/index.do).

Busan is well connected to other major cities in Korea and internationally by air, sea, and land. Participants can reach Shilla Stay Haeundae with the workshop organizer (KoFlux) from Gimhae international airport. Please provide your flight schedule to the workshop organizer so that he/she will assist your travel to the hotel.

The workshop organizer will provide all necessary financial support for international and domestic participants throughout the workshop period. This includes, accommodation, meals, domestic transportation, banquet, etc. Upon arrival to the hotel, the participants will receive their allowance after accounting for the (expected) expenses that will be fully arranged/managed by the workshop organizer.
