Functionalization of Unbleached Flax Fibers by Direct Integration of Nano-silver through Internal and External Reduction

  Abstract

Abolition of bleaching as a sequential step in functionalization of flax fibers is a quite important issue for diminishing of the treatment steps, saving energy, lowering the chemical consumption and consequently reducing the final cost. Therefore, herein, functionalization of the scoured flax fibers in one-pot process is systematically presented, via straightforward insertion of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) using two different reduction methods including internal and external reduction. Ag+ was reduced by using the functional groups of flax in the internal reduction, while, trisodium citrate was used as an external reducing agent in the external reduction method. Functionalization was performed to acquire a decorative yellowish color, ultraviolet (UV) protection and antimicrobial properties for flax fibers. The formation of AgNPs within flax fibers was confirmed by absorbance spectra, color data, carboxyl and aldehyde contents. Silver contents onto fibers was ranged in 4.9-11.8 g/kg, depending on the type of flax fibers and reduction method. By insertion of AgNPs, the scoured fibers were acquired reddish-yellow color with color strength of 8.7-10.5 related to the surface plasmon resonance AgNPs. The AgNPs-scoured flax fibers were exhibited by very good UV protection (30 < UPF < 40) and excellent antibacterial activity. The release of Ag from flax fibers was quite low (2.2-15.4 %) confirming that the functionalized fibers had good durability. In one pot step without bleaching, scoured flax fibers were gained concurrent/durable triple functions, which considerably valuable for the economical and environment impact in industrialization of flax.
