  Abstract

In order to study the ability to knit and mechanical damage of short fiber composite yarn (SFCY) in the warp knitting process, the core-spun yarn, compact-spinning and blended yarn by ring spinning were knitted by the tricot warp-knitting machine with three different structures and speeds. The mechanical properties, the hairiness and appearance of the yarns were characterized before and after warp knitting. The results demonstrated that the breaking strength and elongation at break of the yarns decreased after warp knitting. As the speed of the machine increased, the breaking strength of the yarn continued to decrease, reaching a maximum of 28%. With the increase in under lapping, the elongation at break of the yarn reached 19% compared with the original yarn. The hairiness index of the yarns had increased significantly from the microscopic morphology. The cotton/polyamide core-spun yarn was the best for warp knitting of the four yarns. And the compact-spinning yarn is more suitable for warp knitting than ring-spun yarn.
