  Abstract

The present study describes a simple and effective approach for the synthesis of four new reactive disperse rhodanine dyes containing a cyanuric chloride group starting from N-amino rhodanine and various substituted primary aromatic amines. Various spectroscopic and analytical techniques were used to characterize the synthesized dyes. The ultraviolet–visible spectra of the synthesized dyes displayed bands due to different types of transitions inside the molecules. Multifunctional properties such as color representation, colorimetric data, dye exhaustion and fixation, dyeing rate, dyeing pH, buildup, and fastness properties of the dyed samples were investigated in detail. Satisfactory results were obtained for the fastness properties and colorimetric data, proving the efficiency of these dyes in dyeing silk and nylon fabrics. The most appropriate conditions for the dyeing of nylon and silk fabrics were a pH of 8 and a dyeing temperature of 100 °C. These dyes are simple to prepare and scale up, which renders them ideal for industrial dyeing applications. Moreover, the antibacterial activity of the dyed fabric was determined according to the colony-forming unit method using dyed silk and nylon 6 fabrics. The dyed fabrics showed higher antibacterial activity against S. aureus as Gram-positive bacteria and E. coli as Gram-negative bacteria. The silk textiles exhibited better antibacterial activity than the nylon 6 fabric owing to the presence of more amide bonds in the former, which promotes the formation of coordination complexes between the fabric and the dye. Moreover, the impact of the dyed fabrics was more pronounced on Gram-positive bacteria than on Gram-negative bacteria because of the structure of each bacterial cell wall.
