  Abstract

In terms of treating oil–water mixtures, the traditional hydrophobic and oleophilic membranes are polluted easily by viscous oils, leading to the low separation efficiency, poor chemical stability, and poor availability of reusing. In this paper, a super-hydrophilic polyetherimide (PEI) nanofibrous membrane (PPEIW) with high amino exposure was prepared by electrospinning and the subsequent etching techniques. Polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) was used as a template to create surface grooves and induce amino exposure. Herein, the template-induced amino exposure method of PEI membrane is proposed and its hydrophilic mechanism has been discussed. The prepared PPEIW membrane has a super-hydrophilicity (water contact angle, WCA = 0°), ultra-high water flux (1959.82 L/m2 h), and excellent oil–water separation property under gravity. The separation efficiencies of both non-emulsified and emulsified oil–water mixtures can reach more than 98%, with high antifouling and reusing performances. More importantly, the membrane shows good aging resistance under conditions of high temperature, low temperature, strong acid and strong base environment.
