  Abstract

Mitigating microfiber release from textiles is one of the most challenging tasks, as the release occurs in every stage of its life cycle. Despite several reported measures to mitigate the microfiber release, the magnitude of the impact is still increasing due to a lack of efficiency of such measures. The aim of this research is to control microfiber release from polyester knitted and woven fabrics using a solvent system consisting of trichloroacetic acid and methylene chloride (TCA–MC). The study used different process parameters to understand the interaction effect and optimized the best treatment conditions for reduced microfiber release. The results of the study reported that the TCA–MC solvent treatment effectively controlled microfiber release from polyester fabrics when the concentration is 1%, and further increment in solvent concentration increases microfiber release. A higher correlation coefficient (r = 93%) was reported with microfiber release reduction and fabric hydrophilic properties. Box–Behnken experimental design results showed an optimum concentration (0.98, 1.23%), treatment time (1.82, 1.80 min), and treatment temperature (35.25, 30 °C), respectively, for woven and knitted fabric. The experimental results showed that TCA–MC solvent treatment under optimized conditions can reduce microfiber release up to 93.79% (from 271.69 to 37.37 microfibers/sq.cm) and 64.72% (from 41.8 to 5.5 microfibers/sq.cm) for knitted and woven fabrics respectively during the laundering process. The major benefit of this treatment is less process complexity and shorter treatment time at room temperature. The treatment was very durable as the treated fabric showed a significant reduction in microfiber release up to ten subsequent washes.
