  Abstract

Water-repellent textiles, which resist water penetration while allowing breathability, are crucial in various industries, including clothing, healthcare, agriculture, and construction, owing to their comfort and versatility. In this study, polyester/viscose fabric was finished with fluoroalkyl acrylic resin to impart water-repellent properties. Oxygen/argon plasma was employed as an environment-friendly pretreatment to improve the water-repellent finishing process. Box–Behnken approach was employed to design the experiment and optimize the effects of plasma treatment time, fluoroalkyl acrylic resin concentration, and curing temperature on the water contact angle of the samples. The results showed that there were optimal levels for all factors to obtain the maximum water contact angle (30 g/L, 161.4 °C, and 6.7 min for resin concentration, curing temperature, and plasma treatment time, respectively). SEM images and ATR–FTIR analysis confirmed the coating of the fabric with fluoroalkyl acrylic resin. The proposed process under the optimum conditions had no adverse effect on the bending length, crease recovery angle, and air permeability of the fabric, while improving the tensile strength and wash fastness of the finished fabrics.
