  Abstract

This is an exploratory study on industrial accidents in the fishing industry and the harmful risk factors affecting them. The analysis of industrial accident statistics and data on work-related diseases and injuries in fisheries workers revealed that occupational accidents were mainly accidents get caught in an object, and work-related diseases manifested mainly as musculoskeletal disorders due to physically burdensome tasks. We investigated harmful risk factors for fisheries workers by analyzing data from the 6th Korean Working Conditions Survey. This survey reported that a high proportion of fisheries workers were engaged in night shifts and weekend shifts and worked more than 10 hours per day, indicating long working hours. Harmful risk factors encountered in the work environment included exposure to vibration, noise, and low temperatures, with particularly high rates of repetitive hand and arm movements, postures causing fatigue or pain, and continuous standing postures. Indeed, repetitive hand and arm movements accounted for more than half of the working hours, which resulted in a high prevalence of lower back pain, upper limb muscle pain, and overall fatigue. Approximately 20% of respondents reported experiencing sleep disorders, and the safety assessment of their work environment showed a higher proportion of negative responses compared to the overall industrial average. The rate of negative impact on health was also higher compared to the overall industrial average.
