  Abstract

Water attractions require careful management of equipment failures and user safety. In particular, corrosion and deterioration of critical components, such as pumps, can directly impact user safety and operational continuity, requiring quantitative evaluation and preventive measures. This study applied Failure Modes and Effects Analysis (FMEA) to 39 water attraction components, identifying pump impeller corrosion as a major risk. The pump system had the second-highest Risk Priority Number, with impeller corrosion posing a high risk due to potential flow reduction, metallic debris intrusion, and user injury. Accordingly, the corrosion characteristics of two candidate metals for the pump system were investigated. Weight loss of cast iron and bronze impellers was compared under operational environment analysis and ASTM G31-21 immersion testing in a 3.5% NaCl solution. Cast iron showed a higher corrosion rate, while bronze demonstrated superior corrosion resistance. Therefore, the latter was evaluated as a more suitable material for water park conditions. This study emphasizes the importance of material selection and regular maintenance in water attraction facilities through FMEA-based risk assessment and corrosion testing. It also suggests that applying corrosion-resistant materials and installing monitoring systems from the initial design stage is necessary for preventive safety strategies.
