  Abstract

Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) represents a new frontier for Internet of Things (IoT) technologies. These new alternatives for enterprise ICT are changing the way organisations today consume IT due to their ability to organise data and share information with resources within a network cluster. IIoT makes organisations become “living organisms”; that can anticipate future changes using the information captured to enhance the organisation’s purpose, thus a sensing enterprise. IIoT technologies have risen in popularity over the years and are increasingly becoming embedded within enterprises of varying kinds, from Manufacturing and Supply chain to Healthcare. However, there are still many challenges which limit organisations from readily implementing IoT technologies. One of the most common challenges identified in current IIoT literature is the ‘integration challenge’- the seamless connectivity and interactions across all functions and services of varying technologies. In the context of this study, the ‘integration challenge’ relates to the features, characteristics or requirements demanded of IIoT technology which impact connectivity with each other, operationally and purposefully. Integration is a critical requirement of IIoT services and platforms, especially given their non-static nature, hence needs to be understood and addressed systematically. Current discourses on this important topic are dispersed. As such, this study aims to provide a synthesis with deep insights that can help progress the cumulative knowledge in this area. We present an evidence-based typology of IIoT integration challenges by mapping existing mechanisms to these challenges and depicting how these may differently manifest across diverse industry contexts as derived from existing literature.
